Professor Andrew Boulton, President-Elect of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for the period 2018-19
Professor Boulton from the UK is a graduate of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and subsequently trained in Sheffield, and Miami prior to accepting an appointment at Manchester University. He has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, mainly on diabetic lower limb and renal complications. Among his many awards, he has received the ADA’s Roger Pecoraro Lectureship, the EASD Camillo Golgi prize and was the first recipient of the international award on diabetic foot research. He was the 2008 winner of the ADA’s Harold Rifkin award for distinguished international service in diabetes. He received the 2012 Georgetown distinguished achievement award in diabetic limb salvage. In 2015 he visited Nagoya, Japan and gave a prize lecture on diabetic complications at the Japan Society of Diabetes, and in 2017 he was the Banting Memorial Lecturer at Diabetes UK and also received the International Diabetes Endocrinologist Award of the year from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
He is a previous editor of Diabetic Medicine and is currently an associate editor of Diabetes Care. He was the founding Chairman of the Diabetic Foot Study Group and was previously Chairman of Postgraduate Education and then Hon. Secretary/ programme chair for the EASD. Until late 2015 he was President of the EASD. Currently, President of Worldwide Initiative for Diabetes Education, Chairman of EURADIA (European Alliance for Diabetes Research) and President-Elect, International Diabetes Federation.
Prof Irl Hirsch, MD; UW professor of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition. University of Washington, USA.
Irl Hirsch, M.D., is a board certified physician at the Endocrine and Diabetes Care Center at UWMC-Roosevelt, the UW’s Diabetes Treatment and Teaching Chair and a UW professor of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition.
Dr. Hirsch’s career has focused on studying the best strategies for the use of insulin therapy and innovations in technology for diabetes management.
Dr. Hirsch earned his M.D. at the University of Missouri. He is the former chair of the Professional Practice Committee for the American Diabetes Association, and a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has authored over 170 papers, numerous book chapters and six books both for patients and physicians and is section editor for UptoDate. He received the American Diabetes Association’s Josiah K. Lilly Sr. Distinguished Service Award and was elected to a Mastership by the American College of Physicians.

Mrs Renza Scibilia; Manager – Type 1 Diabetes and Consumer Voice, Diabetes Australia
Renza Scibilia has lived with type 1 diabetes since April 1998. She is a well-known diabetes patient advocate and activist, promoting a person-centred approach to healthcare, and in the development of diabetes information, services and technologies. Renza has worked in diabetes organisations for over 16 years and is currently the Manager of Type 1 Diabetes and Consumer Voice at Diabetes Australia. Previously, she was the Consumer Engagement Manager at a Diabetes Australia state-based organisation where she established and managed Australia’s first consumer-led and consumer-focused diabetes program, offering support, information and peer connections for people with diabetes and their families. Renza is an active and well-known member of the diabetes online community (DOC). She’s well-versed in social media and its application in diabetes peer support. Renza is the creator and author of her own diabetes blog where she writes about issues of interest to people living with diabetes. The blog, Diabetogenic (www.diabetogenic.wordpress.com), has received awards for excellence in health writing, and is one of Australia’s most widely-read consumer patient blogs. She is also a frequent contributor to health publications. Renza is a regular invited speaker at health professional, industry and patient conferences around the world, where she speaks about: why the language we use is important in healthcare; how online platforms are used to improve consumer engagement with healthcare professionals and industry; the role of people with diabetes in the design and development of health programs; and the significance of peer support.
